Frequently Asked Questions...
Prison on television and real life?
1) Why do some prison officers address prisoners by their surnames rather than first names?
2) Where prisoners sometimes find out things about officers family and backgrounds, can this happen in real life even now?
3) If in real life, a prison officer lost a loved one tragically, and the prisoners found out about this, would the prisoners use this to taunt or annoy the officer like they do on television?
4) If you have ever seen prisoner cell block h, were there any officers like vera bennett, colleen powell, meg morris or joan ferguson in rea life?
Answer:
1. In reality, all prison officers address prisoners by their surnames rather than their first names. They are trained to do so and against policy not to. Use of a prisoners first name is considered too 'friendly' and a threat to good order.
2. Prisoners certainly do find out things about officers family and background - more often today than in any time in the past. Background checks are incredibly common these days for everything from employment and credit to housing and even dating. It is certainly easier today for a family member or friend to do a search on a guard and pass that information on during a visit.
3. Tragic news is used by both sides to taunt and torment. Don't be misled into thinking that the guards are above such tactics.
4. Sorry - I've never seen the show.
