Arizona Immigration Law Slammed By Napolitano, Others
Ever since the Arizona immigration law was signed by Governor Jan Brewer, condemnations have been pouring in. The President, the Mexican government, Meghan McCain, and Janet Napolitano, all are against it. The debate is over methods, though it is an issue in need of redress. The problem already sends Arizona running for a personal loan company to deal with it.
Janet Napolitano slams Arizona immigration law
The Arizona immigration law was blasted by Janet Napolitano. Napolitano is the head of the Department of Homeland Security, and believes it "is a misguided law." (From CNN .) The issue has long gone without remedy, and it may come to the fore of Congressional and Presidential agendas.
Meghan McCain breaks rank with famous father
Breaking with John McCain's assessment of the bill, Meghan McCain has lambasted the Arizona immigration law. A recent post by her on The Daily Beast declared the bill as it "misses the bigger picture of what is really going on with illegal immigration." She also posted those who don't see the impacts of illegal immigration on a daily basis, positive and negative, can't appreciate the complexity of the situation.
The Government of Mexico weighs in
The President of Mexico does not support this bill, and thinks Governor Brewer has acted contrary to what the best interests of all involved. A statement was issued by President Felipe Calderon condemning the bill.
"The criminalization of the migration phenomenon, far from contributing to the cooperation and collaboration between Mexico and the U.S., represents an obstacle in the solution of common problems in the border region." - from Christian Science Monitor .
Other Mexican officials also condemned the Arizona immigration law. Consensus seems to be that Washington has neglected the issue, and the attitude towards many immigrants, especially Latinos, has been ignorant of their contributions and hypocritical.
Not like this is the first time
This isn't the first time that a specific immigrant population has been dealt with by heavy handed legislation. It didn't work then. Most immigrants come to this country with a quick payday by honest labor in mind. A solution that doesn't benefit both sides would seem remiss, though there are certainly always bad apples. There is supply and demand for their labor, and very little standing in the way of those forces goes un-circumvented for long.
