Self Defense Training : How To Find A Good Class
A typical self defense class consists of an instructor teaching a group of students basic self defense techniques. It's a friendly, relaxed environment, with the instructor cracking some jokes to loosen people up, and then a bit of hands on training. The students practice moves and techniques on each other, but everyone is very careful and no-one wants to offend anyone else. So, what's the problem with all of this? This is the model that so many schools have stuck to for so long. Surely it works if everyone does it right? Unfortunately this isn't true. The truth is, you're training in a very unrealistic environment. The likelihood is that you signed up with a friend to have a bit if fun. Now, I'm not saying that you shouldn't have a good time at a self defense class, but you should be more focused on learning than having fun. You must train in an environment that simulates real life combat. That means there must be loud screaming...real anger...shoving, stares, and fiery exchanges. If you train like that, then you will not be caught off guard when you get in a confrontation. So, when looking for self defense training, try to find a school that focuses on simulating real life situations. You don't have to go to a self defense that leaves you with bruises and a bloody nose at the end of it, but you should find one that takes you out of your comfort zone. If you can find a school that offers this, you're in good shape. Once you find a program or school that offers what you are looking for, I advise you to try it out for a weekbefore making any long term commitment to it. You may have to go through three or more schools, but the effort will pay off in the long run. Having found a good self defense school, you must attend weekly and put in 100% effort.
