Hitchcock - Film
Topaz is one of his more popular, later films that you might recognize him from. You might even know him for a spoof of one of his movies like High Anxiety. You owe something to Alfred Hitchcock, however, if you enjoy watching horror movies.
Alfred Hitchcock started work as an advertising designer and draftsman. Because of his skill and interest in movies, he became successful as a title-card designer for silent movies.
Before making his mark on the silver screen as a director, Alfred Hitchcock wrote for silent movies such as Dangerous Lies and Woman to Woman in both Great Britain and Germany. In 1925, at last, he had the opportunity to direct The Pleasure Garden. He continued directing other silent movies. It was immediately evident he was skilled at story telling with unique camera work.
Unfortunately, some of these early works are only known from portions of the film or have been completely lost.
Sound made it possible for him to enrich his film making. Many of his earlier films were produced in Britain. His success with these early 'talkies' gave him the resources to perfect his art.
Perhaps Alfred Hitchcock is known best to the current generation for the remakes of his films. Remakes of many of his later films were huge box office successes.
If you get the chance to watch one of Hitchcock's films, be sure to watch for him. He often made cameo appearances of some type in his films. Here are a few examples:
* The Birds made in 1963 where he is seen leaving the pet shop with two white Sealyham terriers as Tippi Hedren enters
* Suspicion made in 1941 where he is seen mailing a letter at the village postbox (long shot)
* Young and Innocent made in 1937 where he is seen outside the courthouse, holding a camera
