The TV Land Awards Recognize Timeless Classics And Modern Favorites
The TV Land Awards, hosted by actor and comedian Tim Allen, was sparkling with television starts from some of the best loved shows of all time. Honorees and presenters included stars that spanned generations, from Betty White down to stars of current hit series, Glee. Awards given out included Future Classic and Fan Favorite.
The cast of the classic television series The Love Boat was honored this year as the TV Land pick for Fan Favorite. The Love Boat, which starred Gavin MacLeod and Bernie Kopell, centered on a cruise ship called Pacific Princess and the lives of the people on board. During its run, the show was nominated for several awards, including two Emmy Awards and four Golden Globes.
Younger viewers must have been overjoyed that the Future Classic award went to the successful new series, Glee. Television’s smash hit of 2009, Glee follows the highs and lows of a secondary school show choir as they attempt to win a national competition. The show gained “future classic” status as a result of its sharp lines and impressive song and dance routines, which make it truly unique.
The esteemed Legend Award was received this year by men who have both changed the face of comedy, Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. Reiner became a television classic as a writer on The Dick Van Dyke Show, while Brooks has several classic comedies under his belt, like Spaceballs, Young Frankenstein and the Broadway hit, The Producers. This marks the first year that there have been two recipients of the Legend Award.
The Pop Culture award, given to the show with the greatest impact on popular culture, went to the popular 1970’s show Charlie’s Angels. In addition to being a much loved television series, Charlie’s Angels inspired two blockbusters starring Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore. The show’s star, Farrah Fawcett, passed away in 2009 but her co-stars, Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith, accepted the award.
The cast of the popular comedy Everybody Loves Raymond was honored with the TV Land Impact Award, with stars Brad Garrett and Ray Romano on hand to accept. They were lucky enough to be presented with their award by TV legend Bob Newhart. During its nine year run, the show was nominated for over one hundred awards and won forty-nine of them.
The short-lived but well loved 1980’s sitcom Bosom Buddies was honored with a celebration of its 30th anniversary. Jay Leno was on hand to present the award for the show, which had two seasons on ABC beginning in 1980, followed by a summer of reruns on NBC in 1984. Tom Hanks, who starred in the show at the start of his career, was there to accept the award. This event was truely amazing, similar to the expected turnout of Idol Gives Back 2010.
The TV Land Awards was a fun and varied event, honoring some of television’s brightest stars, past and present. A wide variety of stars turned out for the ceremony, from classic comedians to contemporary Oscar winners. The show was a great way to re-live memories from the amazing shows that came into our lives through our televisions for so many years. Video of this event and others, like Idol Gives Back 2010, can be seen at celebrityfootage.com.
