Behind The Bagua
Bagua is the term applied to the eight diagrams that are used in Taoist cosmology. Together, they represent the basic fundamental principles of reality. In no particular order they are sky, lake, fire, thunder, wind, water, mountain, and earth. Also referred to as trigrams, the elements have ties to astronomy, geography, and astrology as well.
Cosmology, in all of its purest forms, is strictly the study of the universe and human beings role in it, by extension. The word cosmology wasn't coined until the mid 1700s but the practice itself had been around for much longer.
A lot of historians cite yin and yang as the source of this philosophy. King Wen, founder of the Zhou Dynasty, offered a philosophical description when he said there were just earth and the heavens back when the world first began. These two mated and then the other six trigrams are their daughters and sons, respectively.
The eight bagua are also essential tools of traditional Feng Shui. Feng Shui is the practice of arranging homes, workplaces, and graves to receive a better flow of energy and spirituality. Their uses are often categorized into two parts which are burial sites and residences. While originating in Chinese culture, many in the western world have also adopted this practice.
In forms of modern Feng Shui, maps were eventually created to help out any enthusiasts looking to productively arrange their belongings. People could use the map to see clearly how certain room locations correlate to specific aspects of life. They include different things like inner knowledge, health, family, and wealth.
The Bagua maps were intended to be used as informative guides for existing rooms. Lay the maps over a floor plan or scaled drawing and it can help you find all of the spots lacking in good energy and chi. You can enhance and improve these areas, by identifying them first. Determining the best spot for fortune and wealth, for example, will ensure you have success in that area if you place your desk there.
Visually, the study's eight diagrams have been widely known and very popular. Both the South Vietnam and South Korean country flags have variations of the diagrams. Slightly changed versions of the symbols have even found their way into mainstream TV shows and films. The popular US show Lost even used types of them for the program's DHARMA Initiative designs and a few well known Japanese programs have taken from them too.
