Happy Birthday Mr. President
Marilyn Monroe Lived Here
During her lifetime, the famous actress Marilyn Monroe lived in over fifty homes. Most of her residences were in California, although she did reside for short periods in Connecticut, New York, Nevada, and for a brief period at the Parkside House estate with playwright Arthur Miller during the filming of The Prince and the Showgirl.
Marilyn's first official home after her birth at the Los Angeles County Hospital was at 5454 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. Marilyn lived here for only twelve days. This brief stay was followed by seven years in Hawthorne, California, her longest stay of any home she resided. For most of her life, Marilyn's tenure in any residence was less than two years.
Marilyn's stay with Lucille and John Carroll was a pivotal point in her career. Her patrons subsidized acting lessens for Marilyn, gave her a generous allowance, and led to her first Hollywood break in The Asphalt Jungle. From this point in her life, Marilyn's fabulous career skyrocketed and her autograph and photo became a collector's dream.
One of Marilyn's best-known residences was her last – her home on Fifth Helena in the Brentwood section in Los Angeles. This was the only home that Marilyn ever owned by herself. Marilyn bought this 2,300 square-foot Spanish-style home for $77,500 with a down payment borrowed from Joe DiMaggio. Under controversial circumstances, Marilyn died in this home in 1962. Fascinating details about Marilyn's financial life and her homes are described in Money Secrets of the Rich and Famous.
Marilyn's former home in Brentwood was offered for sale in 2010 for over $3.6 million. The single-story home has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and an attractive pool in the backyard. The charming home is at the end of a cul-de-sac and is only few miles from her final resting place in the Westwood section of Los Angeles, California.
