"my open diary" - in a true story
A SYNOPSIS - Part 1
History is the best teacher, and those who fail to learn lessons by its wisdom through the experiences are doomed to repeating it ugly and negative chapters. It is very pertinent for us to write our history when we have a story to tell and share in a testimony as we have seen in the bible and other great books which today stands as pivotal instruments in shaping society and the world. It is man who makes history, history always repeat itself, but we never learn by its experiences. In our selfishness and ego driven characteristics in instances, we feel invincible with the assumption that "IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME". Such is the nature of the institutions of life`s adventures from which only an handful do not repeat their mistakes twice or over and over again.
That do not exclude, trials and tribulation befalling you in cause of the journey for survival, prosperity and success as the overall objectivity of all mankind. I have never seek any pity in all my calamities, because I am of the conviction that my "God" was showing me what he had wanted me to see, know in experiences, as well as passing through the many roads in pains and others in joy and safety because of his purpose for my life. I will as from now on, documenting the many chapters of my life, in associations and collaborations with presidents, ministers, generals, officers, IGP`s, businessmen and women as well as relationships with our local youths and branded Raray Boys.
Many Individuals always ask me a pertinent and very important question, which I just could not resist but answering. "What are you SYL? A Politician, A Pastor, Businessman or guess you are simply a Man of many Parts and many Words of Wisdom and encouragement!" Experiences in life brings out from us many characteristics and behavioural patterns that we never dream possible. Saul changed from a soldier to one of GOD`S preachers after being a non believer and a persecutor of servants of the Lord. We are all political animals by nature in principle. Politics and religion are the earliest profession known to mankind and it continues to be the most important and dominant factor regulating our lives and threatening our very existence today. I started my childhood upbringing humbly in a catholic mission, where I use to get up at around 5 o'clock in the morning to sweep, and prepare church and the alter for mass before going to class which starts at 8.00 am. My father too was an ardent catholic and dedicated the remaining chapters of his life to God so that I may find favour to live in his mercies and grace.
This will be a prelude and sequence to my book in this synopsis for your perusal wetting your appetite from events in our politics and business leading to the many crisis befallen me; my close to death encounters, my journey to the central pademba road prison; abduction from my hotel room in Guinea leading to my trip into exile; as well as the destruction of my humble business investments in Sierra Leone which was planned and well orchestrated by elements in our society, I will name in due course. There were many others that suffered more than I did in stigmatization, loss of assets and wealth from deliberate action from the system and its mafia cartel influencing our politicians and governance in the various dispensations which history and posterity will be the only judge in the fullest of time to bring to light these nefarious activities. My writings will be dedicated as well to the memory of late ERIC JAMES whom I had so much admiration for, and was a mentor to me that I tried to emulate and copy from by examples and conduct. He was a DJ in Germany before coming back home to Freetown with his success and capital to invest in business. He became an house hold name JAMES INTERNATIONAL owning the SASSMAN ETERNOL PROJECT, THE IMPORTATION OF RICE AND THE EXPORT OF COCOA. He was envied and destroyed by politicians acting as agents of local businessmen and foreigners, and external forces of evil within our midst who have dominated and monopolized our economy breaking the backs of local entrepreneurs when ever they attempt to reach the top of their pinnacle.
I felt so much within, for his calamities as a promising indigenous Sierra Leonean who contributed so much to our economy and especially the agricultural sector influencing many lives and families with his generosity and numerous assistance in helping small businesses with starter packs and micro financing. I had to set aside my own story after serious reflection on his which was greater tribulation. Sierra Leoneans have demonstrated intolerance and lack of compassion for each other by their tendencies of PULL HIM DOWN SYNDROME in envy, jealousy, vilification's and persecutions plaguing the society since independence, into succeeding generations and dispensatns. The irony and truth about this phenomenon is unfortunately affecting primarily our very politicians, heads of institutions and our very security agencies which have been used and influenced to facilitate and promote such acts on individuals perceived to be a threat to certain interests or groups, cartels operating within the system, which is today responsible for the decay, inferiority complexes suffered within the country and people settling for second best in our beloved "MAMA SALONE@50".
ECOMOG INTERVENTION 1998
Just as far back as it seems like yesterday in February 1998, I was in a canoe been taken out of my beloved country called Sierra Leone for the safety of my life, while it was engulfed in fire and bloodshed in a military intervention campaign by ECOMOG all in the name of power and politics. I left behind some of my family members, my businesses, friends and relatives including the innocent mothers, fathers and children who could not flee for their lives. What made it even unbearable was those I could not bring along because there was no more empty space in a boat meant for 20 people now being filled by 60 men, women and children I had to take along with me on the journey to safety. I tried to hold back my tears because a man is not supposed to cry, as we ply the rough seas between Goderich, through Lungi, Yelibua into Guinea, Conakry taken about a day or so which did not matter how long. However, I utterly failed in this endeavor not to cry. I simply cannot hold out any more, but allowed the tears to flow freely on my face as I take solace from time to time reflecting on the the skies above where I know, I have a place with the stars. So was the little children from a baby of about 4 months old to children between 3 years of age to 10 yr old, could not stop crying from the beginning of the journey to the end. It was too emotional to bear.
In my sorrow with hindsight, I was remembering the countless happy times and privileges God has blessed me enough with in his infinite mercy. Now, I know nothing is permanent and that we do die to be reborn like the leaves, anew physically as well as spiritually, emotionally in our quest for survival in this life. This is my personal belief and philosophy. Nevertheless, beliefs, no matter how strong and deep rooted could lose their charm and meaning. Especially, when one loses a beloved relative, friend, partner or even an animal you are attached to emotionally. In fact, those beliefs could amount to nothing all of the sudden when you face calamities or tribulations amounting to the loss of life, collateral's and assets. Because at that particular moment, you just want to know why it had to happen and in your quite moments, why is it you?
NPRC TAKE OVER 1992
It was a Monday just about a week after the coup at around 11.00 pm lying down on the floor at my home in lumley, regent road watching CNN when suddenly about eight military personnel entered the lounge upstairs. One of them asked, are you Syl Juxon Smith? I said yes, you have to come with us. I ask why? You do not have to ask us any questions. I requested to put on something proper as I was in a boxer short, which the officer in charge agreed whom I seem to recognized. I was followed to my bedroom where I put on a track suit and followed them down stairs into a waiting jeep realizing that, they came with about three other vehicles which personnel had been through the compound and other areas in the house. i entered the jeep in the back sandwich by two other officers, one in the front with the driver and another three in the back extension. It was the new PAJERO JEEPS bought by the APC government for the expected visit of the POPE which has been cleared from the water quay during the coup the week before which was on a Monday. Many intimidating and insulting remarks where made while driving me around town looking for some other individuals they had in mind and their lists. I remember some of the residences vividly.
Most of the individuals have already fled town or are in hiding. Some of these names will be revealed in the published version which is almost completed in the hands of my publishers. We arrived at kabasa lodge which wa the headquarters then of the NPRC senior cadre. I was ask to get down and follow them. On my way upstairs, I saw one of our staff member who is an ISRAELI name YACOUB who was runing the diamond company just below the two floors we shared between DIAMANT S LANGER and Trans-Africa at Walpole street, next to the American embassy. He was sitting on the floor with hands tied and blood runing down his face. He shouted my name, and you could see he was in panic. I stopped to console him, telling him not to be worried. the other officer urged me to move on and follow them. We got upstairs, they ask me to stand outside while they went inside to discuss. The officers came outside and ask that I followed them down stairs. We were now in the compound of Kabasa Lodge standing by some vehicles. They went away from me to have a discussion amongst themselves presumably from orders received upstairs. In their company was a police officer an SPO who I have known very well. One of the military officer directed I get into the vehicle, which I did and we drove off. This was about 3.30 am in the morning hours. We arrived at the CID at Pademba road. I was asked to get down, taken to the counter and directed to be locked up. I was then taken to a cell, which was so full and I knew some of the individuals, both young and old men, some prominent in society.
Not too long after settling down and canvassing with others about the various ordeals and traumas, YACOUB was also finally brought in to join us. When he saw me he felt a bit relived and comfortable. He was arrested at the Lungi while trying to collect the diamonds for export certified by GGDO and all tax paid, and money which came in the previous Saturday KLM FLIGHT just before the Monday coup when all air-traffic was suspended in Sierra Leone until that following Monday. He was arrested with the amount of $500.000 dollars in cash and $800.000 dollars value in diamonds which was in the position of the controller of Customs having being through all due process. On his way, he was questioned while been escorted to Freetown by the NPRC officer in charge of lungi airport. That was how my name SJS came up, when YACOUB was asked who was he working for, or who are his bosses. My name and that of Mr Frank Karefa Smart who was a director and consultant of the company came up. By the time they got to his house, he was not to be found. That was how they got to me at Lumley just after 11.00 pm that night. It was 14 days and night now spent at the CID HEADQUARTER.
I was released with YACOUB from detention without any explanation. Most of our goods, money including two of our vehicles (looted) seized. After that episode, I tried to make several presentation to the new NPRC officials, but to no avail. INSTEAD ALL I GOT BACK IN RETURN, WAS A NOTIFICATION TO APPEAR BEFORE A COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INCLUDING OTHER NAMES LIKE THE LATE ERIC JAMES. I did appear before the Late Marcus Jones prosecuted by the EX Vice president of Sierra Leone Mr Solomon Berewa under the SLPP government of EX President Tejan Kabah, who was also appointed adviser then to Capt Valentine Strasser NPRC regime heading a constitutional review committee, who in return brought in his then boss at the united nations James Jonah to head the electoral commission. Was this part of a grand plan, or design or part of the destiny of SALONE? Well in the fullest of time, the truth shall set our beloved country and all the innocent blood free.
I was finally exonerated at the commission of enquiry set up by the NPRC government, as was reported. Nothing adverse was found against my person, business or activities in conclusion. The late learned judge Marcus Jones found it very incomprehensible stating out of records as to why "Syl Juxon Smith" was brought to such a commission since I have never did any business with government or any of its agencies. It was all based on speculations and false accusations from malice that could not be substatiated. The main thrust of the questions asked were of two folds ask by Mr Solomn Berewa prosecuting. The first, was "If I have ever done any business with the APC government?" To which I replied No; and the second was "If I knew any woman by the name of Binta Jalloh" to which as I was going to answer, the learned judge in her wisdom, intervene in stopping that line of questioning which she said was not in line with the terms of reference by which the commission is directed. She iterated that the question is personal, Mr Juxon Smith cannot answer such. Is that why the young man was brought here? The transcript should be there for all to see. That was Salone for you.
There are concrete things we all want to think about doing keeping ourselves motivated for the bigger objectivity of humanity. We must realise that environment is stronger than will. Does our country, and the physical environment support what we're trying to do in the past and the present? You can have all the will in the world to do something good and well in life, but if your environment, country, people, politicinas or leaders doesn't support you, it's not going to last long or happen.
