Off Broadway

First Time Producers In New York City
New York theater can be a daunting place for a new producer. But, if you understand a few things, you can do quite well. Broadway is the place of the million-dollar commercial production. Off-Broadway is where you can produce a slightly cheaper play but not too cheap. Plus, Off-Broadway plays usually are less commercial, having an edge or being experimental. Off-off Broadway, however, is friendly to new producers in that plays can be put up quite on the cheap. This can mean pennies on the dollar up to ten of thousands of dollars. There are many factors to consider. You probably won't make money at this level but if you are starting out, this may be the place you want to be.
The place to start is finding a great play to produce. If you have the time, visit the local library or book store and start digging. If you are short on time and producing is something you are doing on the side, I find that ebook readers are very handy. You can take them anywhere and sneak a read while you are at your day job, the gym or on the subway.
Next, you should pick a location for your play. Off-off Broadway theaters are located all over New York. The factors you should consider are price, location and size. Price obviously depend son your budget, location depends on the audience you want to attract, uptown, downtown, Brooklyn, etc. And size depends on how much publicity you can do to bring in audience or the scope of the play itself.
Once you have the place, you need to audition the actors. If you go through the union, you are adding cost but you are getting quality. If you go union in New York you have to go all the way and hire a union director, stage manager, etc., pay into health and social security, etc. Once again, it depends on your budget.
You have the actors and theater but an empty stage. Your next task is thinking about props, set, lights, sound and all production elements. You can do this cheaply as well if you try hard enough. I produced a play that needed crystal jewelry and we were able to get many pieces of crystal jewelry wholesale for very little money.
You may have all the other elements, but if you have no audience, you have no play. Professional can be had who will bring in an audience by producing a promotional campaign. They will also get reviewers to critique your show. Or you can do it all yourself and hope for the best. Listing in the local papers is one free thing you should definitely do. For one play we got more audience by advertising a contest. Someone associated with the play donated an Ibanez electric guitar and we raffled it off.
The price of producing an Off-off Broadway play can definitely be reasonable, especially for someone with a little money burning a whole in their pocket. It is also within reason to ask friends and relatives without causing them to use their life savings. The play probably won't bring back what you put in money-wise. But, it will definitely be rewarding and if it's good and gets reviews can lead to much bigger things.
